Celtic Calligraphy with Illustration
This one day workshop focuses on learning to write a Celtic script and combining a short text with illustration. The script source is known as Uncial and is both attractive and versatile. It is seen in early manuscripts such as the Book of Kells and also widely used today in contemporary calligraphy and design. It is surprisingly easy to write in either straight or flowing lines!
After a welcome tea or coffee on arrival, the morning session will focus on learning to make the letterforms, working from exemplar sheets with plenty of one-to-one tuition and group demonstrations. There will be examples of work to view and photocopies of Celtic design and illumination for you to use and keep. The course is suitable for all levels (age 18+) from beginners to more experienced calligraphers. Previous artistic experience is not essential.
The afternoon session will invite you to create a Celtic inspired artwork combining a short text (just two or more lines) with simple drawn or traced illustration. A choice of texts will be available but please feel free to bring your own. All necessary calligraphic and art materials will be supplied.
