The Worcester Lecture 2023 | The NHS is Sick! What's the Cure?

Founded shortly after World War II, the NHS is treated with reverence by many and is cherished for being accessible and free at the point of use. We celebrated it during the 2012 London Olympics and clapped for it during the pandemic. 'Our NHS' is a source of national pride.
But, with the tax burden on track to reach its highest sustained level since the NHS was founded, Britons are paying more and more for a service they increasingly cannot access as quickly as they need.
A record 2.5m Britons are out of work because they are sick. There is a major NHS staffing shortage, but the long term workforce plan doesn’t start until 2025. On basic measures of health, Britain suffers by comparison
with its rich-world peers.
So how did the NHS get here? And what’s to be done?
Lord Victor Adebowale CBE will
grapple with these questions and argue that a radical shift in focus is required.

About Lord Victor Adebowale CBE
Victor is Chair of the NHS Confederation, which is the membership organisation that brings together, supports and speaks for the whole healthcare system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Before this, he was Chief Executive of Turning Point, a social enterprise.
He is a Non-Executive Director of the Co-Operative Group, Collaborate CIC, Nuffield Health, Visionable and Leadership in Mind. He is also the Chair of Social Enterprise UK. He was awarded a CBE for services to the unemployed and homeless and became a crossbench peer in 2001.
Victor is an innovative and passionate leader with a deep commitment to integrity, political awareness and highest standards of professional behaviour.

About the Worcester Lecture
The Worcester Lectures, hosted by the University of Worcester and Worcester Cathedral, are an annual contribution to the rich cultural heritage of Worcester, celebrating and further strengthening the links between the two institutions. As a common theme, the lectures aim to explore the important areas of morality in public life.
